Sunday- We headed for Pintler Veterans Memorial Scenic Highway. We stopped at Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park and walked part of the Anaconda Historic Copper Trail. This was a big copper mining area. There is even a golf course built on the slag. We continued on with a stop for a hike to Storm Lake. The kids were excited to see their first prairie dogs! It rained a little on the way down, but overall it was a great hike. Philipsburg was our next stop for The Sweet Palace (and coffee for the adults.) We headed back to the airbnb via the scenic hwy.
Monday- J was back to work today. After school work, the kids and I headed to Madison Buffalo Jump State Park where different tribes would run a herd bison off a cliff to stock up for the winter. It was a beautiful day for a hike. Cooper and I had just read how William Clark was doing some land exploring and got his feet torn to pieces by prickly pear. He was traveling about the same time of year we were, and the grass is so tall it blocks the cacti. It was so neat to understand how difficult it really would have been to see the cacti in the thick, tall grass. After out hike, we headed to Headwaters State Park for a picnic and hike. We watched a beaver play in the grass for a while and saw planes on a train! We drove down to see the headwaters of the Missouri (which was the goal of L&C's expedition) and to start our hike. But the hike I randomly chose was very exposed and right next to the road. We decided to just head back to the airbnb and pick a different hike a different day. It's only 30 minutes away, so I hope we get to!
Tuesday- We headed to Bozeman to stock up on some groceries and to see friends. Nicoll was in town for her high school reunion and a ridge run. She's staying with a family friend who happens to be in my online book club, so I got to meet her in person! Nicoll went with us to the Montana Science Center. It was small, but our science museum membership from home got us in for free. And it turns out they have a 3d printing lab and a laser cutter upstairs for the kids to use. The kids had a blast! We have to go next week to pick up Coop's printed design.
Wednesday- We had a slower day since we had to get ready for our Glacier trip. We did school work and went to Ringing Rocks. We have been using the navigation in our rental, but after 30 minutes, I realized it had taken us the wrong way. We were about to cross the continental divide with nowhere to turn around. Oops. We did eventually get there thanks to google maps! 4 miles on an unmaintained road made me nervous! But we made it, and it was so neat!! We spent the rest of the day enjoying our airbnb views, doing school work, and packing.
The pictures ended up mostly in order today! yay!
